Visit the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage

One of the lesser-known facts about Moab and the surrounding region is that it has been used for a variety of western films over the decades. You will find the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage to be a part of the Red Cliffs Ranch that continues to raise cattle and horses. A variety of western films have been filmed at the ranch since it was discovered by John Ford back in the 1940s. Films such as Rio Grande, Wagon Master, and The Commancheros have all used the incredible backdrop and scenery for their films. Filmmaking legends such as John Wayne and Lee Marvin have all been on set for their classic films. Get to know more about this rich filmmaking history by stopping in the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage. You will find a variety of unique memorabilia on display that will showcase each of the legendary films. The Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage is open daily from 8:00 AM to 1000 PM at the Red Cliffs Ranch.

Indoor Wine Tasting at Castle Creek Winery

If it’s going to rain in Moab, why not head inside for a wine tasting or two? You can do just that when you stop at Castle Creek Winery. This award-winning winery is known for producing some incredible wines with varieties such as chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot. Castle Creek Winery is a solo operation that bottles, labels, and boxes each wine they produce at the vineyards. This winery is also located at the historic Red Cliffs Ranch so you can easily combine it with a trip to the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage. The indoor tasting room is the perfect spot to escape the rain for a bit and try out each variant of wine being offered. You will be able to look out at the incredible views of the Colorado River that are within view. Castle Creek Winery is open daily from noon to 7:00 PM at the tasting room; bottle sales are open at 10:00 AM each day in case you just want to grab a bottle for your vacation rental.

Take a Tour at Tom Till Fine Art

There is nothing more relaxing than spending an hour or two checking out all of the fine art created in the region you are visiting. When it’s time to make the most of a great getaway opportunity, some travelers can’t imagine a trip without plenty of sugar-white beaches, emerald waves, and shoreline adventures involved. Others are more drawn to the mountains when it’s time to rest and relax. Still, others find their best vacation self comes out when they’re headed somewhere dominated by beautiful desert landscapes and options to get out and explore red rocks and canyons in abundance. If the latter sounds like you, planning a trip to mesmerizing Moab in the summer or fall is bound to be the best choice you’ll make all year!

Moab is a vacation destination of majestic proportions situated in eastern Utah that still finds a way to retain its welcoming charm. As a gateway to some of the nation’s most enchanting National and State Parks, Moab is endlessly alluring to those who have a heart for outdoor adventure and adrenaline-pumping fun. Still, its scenic surroundings, collection of savory restaurants, and boutique shops make it a destination just as well suited to travelers who are looking to enjoy a getaway at a more leisurely pace.

No matter how you spend your time in Moab this summer or fall, making the experience begins with creating a comprehensive itinerary that takes every amazing destination into account! The following are a few stops, activities, and attractions that are sure to elevate your summer or fall escape from a great time to an unforgettable experience that will have you coming back to Moab for more in the future!

Things to Do While You’re Here: From Pristine Parks to Thrilling Bike Trails

It’s hard to imagine a trip to beautiful Moab without some well-deserved time set aside to explore and experience iconic Arches National Park. While summer is a season that brings travelers this way in droves, those who book a fall getaway will likely find this appealing park to be a bit less crowded if that’s the goal. Either way, it’s a place that showcases some of nature’s very best work and isn’t to be missed no matter when you arrive in town.

Fall in Moab

Arches National Park sits just north of Moab’s city center and is bordered by the Colorado River to the southeast. Since its establishment as a National Park in 1929, Arches has been captivating visitors and locals alike with its one-of-a-kind collection of over 2,000 natural sandstone arches it hosts! Experiencing these arches up close is an amazing experience whether you’re in the park to admire the view or can’t wait to capture it all on camera. While Balanced Rock and Delicate Arch are just a few of the many memorable formations to be found here, a day spent in Arches National Park on the trails is sure to inspire discoveries of all types.

For all of the splendor that a stop at Arches National Park promises to provide, a trip to Moab in the summer or fall should also include time spent at Canyonlands National Park. A bit further from Moab, this intriguing destination offers a captivating collection of canyons to explore and observe, much as the name indicates. Featuring a dramatic desert landscape, Canyonlands is not a National Park that one could ever hope to see in a single day. It’s actually a collection of four distinct areas to explore and discover, each of which features its own collection of natural wonder and could take an extensive amount of time to enjoy thoroughly! This makes Canyonlands a place that’s worth returning to and a destination that offers up endless intrigue for those with a passion for pursuing time in nature. The park enjoys a maze of trails to be discovered and if you’re looking for added insight, consider booking a ranger-led tour through one of the main districts while you’re in the area.

A third, and just as exciting stop to experience while you’re in Moab is Dead Horse Point State Park. This captivating destination is known for hosting some of the most scenic views the region has to offer up thanks to the many 2,000-foot vertical cliffs and canyons that make up the thrilling landscape. Hiking and biking trails abound at Dead Horse Point State Park which is a mere 32-miles from central Moab and wonderfully convenient to get to.

While all of the national and state parks that adorn Moab’s landscape come with some inviting bike trails to take to, those that can’t wait to explore on two wheels at thrilling speeds will want to make Slickrock Bike Trail a top activity on their itinerary while they’re in town. This popular mountain biking destination is not for the faint of heart and is generally reserved for experienced mountain bikers looking to push their limits. At 10.5 miles in length, a trip along Slickrock takes cyclists past petrified sand dunes, over ancient sea beds, and across some truly unforgiving, yet undeniably beautiful terrain.

Museums to Explore

While outdoor adventure is definitely a highlight during the summer or fall in Moab when the temperatures rise this time of year and you could use some time out of the sun to restore, heading to a museum is always a good option. Make your way to the Moab Museum at 118 E. Center Street Tuesday through Saturday any time between noon and 8:00 pm when you’re looking to pair an engaging experience with some regional education as well. This museum hosts a variety of displays and exhibits that highlight the area’s unique geology as well as its rich mining and pioneering past. In prehistoric times, dinosaurs roamed the landscape that now makes up Moab, so you won’t want to miss the exhibits that speak to the efforts in paleontology that are ongoing and work to discover more about the amazing creatures that once called Moab home.

Once you’ve taken time to make your way through the Moab Museum, a stop at the Moab Information Center is in order. Situated at 25 E. Center Street, the Moab Information Center offers up a wealth of information related to local landmarks, activities, and events. The on-site staff is more than willing to answer questions, help you plan that ideal Moab adventure, or simply provide you with the trail maps you’ll need to make the most of the journey. Either way, it’s a place worth checking out when you want to get to know your vacation destination a little better.

Tours to Take

For adrenaline-seeking travelers, Moab is a destination where you don’t have to look far to find heart-pounding adventures. A great way to experience the best of Moab’s dynamic landscape when you’re new to the area is to book an amazing adventure tour. For many visitors during fall and summer in Moab, a trip isn’t complete without a Hell’s Revenge 4×4 off-roading excursion that’s sure to be one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Over the course of 2.5 hours, a Hell’s Revenge off-road tour gives participants a chance to zoom over sandstone domes and Slickrock ledges that are truly breathtaking and best maneuvered by the professionals. Each UTV is generally able to seat up to four passengers at a time and some of the highlight sightseeing stops along the way include Abyss Canyon, the La Sal Mountains, and the mighty Colorado River.

You can also stay cool by visiting a local attraction such as the Moab Film Museum. Local wineries such as Castle Creek Winery produce award-winning wines, so stop by for a tasting or grab a bottle to go. The options are endless when you visit around the 4th of July!

Book Your Stay in Moab

There is plenty of fun and excitement waiting for you in Moab when you visit for the 4th of July. Book your stay today by reserving one of our vacation rentals in Moab.

We are not going to lie to you, summer and fall in the desert can get a bit toasty, and when you are planning a seasonal getaway to Moab, chances are you will find yourself seeking sources of water. As to be expected, we advise that you keep hydrated during your stay, but we also invite you to spend some quality time playing in the H2O with a visit to the Moab Aquatic Center! Located at 374 Park Avenue, this indoor/outdoor water recreation area is the best place to cool off and let loose any frustrations you may have. It’s difficult to stay in a bad mood when you make a giant splash as you cannonball into the cool blue waters of the aquatic center!

With the Mountains Standing Guard

As the sun shines brightly on happy vacationers and local residents, the outdoor section of the Moab Aquatic Center is where most of the action lies! Surrounded by white tables with blue umbrellas (allowing dad and mom to keep their skin safe from the sun), the outdoor lap pool offers three lanes for competitive fun, while the zero entry pool is where your littles will want to play! A current channel is right next to the lap pool, as is a bubble pool, which, for those who are curious, is simply a pool with jets similar to a hot tub but without the heat. An island in the center features slides built into red rock that imitates the mountains that surround the space, giving the younger kids a safe place to show off their daredevil sides! Water tumbling off the sides offers a waterfall effect. Also surrounding the pools, white loungers are provided to let kids rest and parents catch some rays as they take in the beauty of the pool and the breathtaking landscape beyond.

Moab Aquatic Center is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are open every other day from 11 AM until 6 PM, except on Sundays when they close at 5 PM.

All Seasons, No Excuses At The Moab Aquatic Center

Of course, if you are visiting in the winter, you may be surprised to discover that pool time is still very much an option, thanks to the huge inside portion of this super exciting center which is home to a six-lane competition pool featuring two diving boards and an 18-foot slide made even more fun with Tarzan yells as you circle round and round, entering the water with a big splash! When you feel like taking the leap, brave souls can choose between the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, practicing their dives as they cleanly enter the water. We at Empty Spaces, however, will stick to the sides of the pools and our cannonball jumps that make a big splash. More white tables at the side of the pool give parents and kids breathing room and a chance to stare out the windows; the Moab scenery is always worth a second look! And because not everyone is into water activities, free Wi-Fi means you can pop on your headset and listen to your favorite podcast while the rest of the family splashes around!

Traveling with a Group?

There are lots of reasons for visiting the red rocks of Moab, including honeymoons, birthday celebrations, and family reunions. If you are traveling with a large group and want a special place to party, the Moab Aquatic Center rents out all three of their pools for special occasions. Costing $100 per hour for the indoor pool and $50 per hour for the outdoor pools, enjoying a day at the pool has never been as fun as it will be when shared with family and friends! A small retail section allows guests to purchase items they may have forgotten; goggles, caps, even plastic pants for the youngsters that may still be in diapers are available to buy.

While You’re Here

Maybe you’ve eaten a little too much of our rich and spicy food and are feeling your clothes tighten, or maybe you’re just the type of person who doesn’t feel right unless they have performed their morning workout. Whatever your reasons, the 2400-square-foot fitness center that is a part of the Moab Aquatic Center has everything you need to keep away your fear of the scale! Offering free weights and cardio machines, this state-of-the-art center promises to be almost as fun as the pools.

Enjoy Your Moab Vacation

At the end of a day filled with fun at the Moab Aquatic Center, heading home to the luxurious comfort of your Empty Spaces vacation escape will be the highlight of your day. The Aquatic Center is just two blocks from our rentals at Entrada, and some units even come with free bikes that you can use to get there. Contact us today and we’ll help you book one of these convenient properties!

Modern and new can be fun, but for many of our visitors taking a step back into the past makes their journey to Moab one they will never forget, as they learn about the people and places that made our desert town one of the most popular in the nation. Originally known as the Spanish Valley in reference to the families that once lived here, the name Moab is considered to have been taken straight from the pages of the bible, and when your historic journey brings you in our direction, we are pretty sure you will find the region a heavenly one! This guide to everything historic promises to make your Moab getaway an exciting adventure you will never forget.

Moab Giants

Before our ancestors stepped foot on the desert land that is Moab, dinosaurs once freely roamed the area, although it probably looked far different than it does today. Moab Giants, a dinosaur museum, allows visitors to see what the creatures once saw. Taking you through a virtual prehistoric aquarium, it teaches us about the undersea creatures as well as the ones who walked on land. Offering the opportunity to meet a megalodon and ancient sea turtles in 5D, as well as the “monsters” that ruled the air and land, the Moab Giants museum, located at 112 UT-313, is a local favorite!

Wilson Arch

The landscape of Moab is one of red clay and sandstone, and some of the natural features of the land entice visitors to examine it a little closer. Wilson Arch is one of the features you won’t want to miss! Created from centuries of wind and water, the opening inside the arch is the perfect spot for a picnic, but if you’re not in the mood for a hike, the pull off located just South of Moab off Highway 191 allows for an amazing photo opportunity. Taking nearly 75 million years to form, the arch was in its infancy when dinosaurs roamed. Its survival is a testament to the hardiness of the Valley; not all formations have stood the test of time!

Petroglyphs in Moab

The best way to learn about the history of a place is through their own words, or in this case, their own pictures. There are many places throughout the valley that feature petroglyphs that are symbols of the cultures of the Native American peoples who made Moab their home. Examine the birthing scene off Kane Road that depicts childbirth of people from 2000 to 8000 years ago or take your children to the Courthouse Wash Rock Art found along the Moab Canyon Pathway; there is a panel interpreting the art in both locations. If your family is interested in something more than red sandstone and pretty pictures created by ancient peoples, Potash Road offers petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks that have been preserved for millions of years. The Golf Course Rock Art Site at 3573 Westwater Road will allow the golfer in your family a chance to play if he or she can tear himself away from the fascinating stories told by the petroglyphs located there.

Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage

When traveling with children, you often discover the difficulty of finding attractions that keep both young and old and happy and entertained. Children’s museums only appeal to the very young, and only the over 18 crowds seem to be drawn to art and history establishments, but the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage may be the exception to the rule! Located at 14 UT-128 and featuring a collection geared towards film enthusiasts, it’s the Western Heritage part that will fascinate your children! All kids love the romance associated with cowboys and the Old West, and this free activity has plenty to keep your children entertained as you fall in love with memorabilia associated with movies that were filmed in the area. Hollywood isn’t the only town where make believe is the key commodity; many Western movies, including Wagon Master, Rio Grande, and Son of Cochise, were filmed right here in Moab!

Moab Cabin

This historic complex located off 65 North 200 East offers a fascinating example of life in Moab in the late 1800s. Featuring a cabin originally built in 1879 and moved here from another location, this is one of the homes that began the settlement of our desert town. Made of wood, clay, and thatch for the roof, this small structure is what most early settlers lived in when they first moved to the region. Also built in 1879 and located in this historic complex is the Moab LDS Church, which served as the primary church for settlers until the congregation grew too large and a new building had to be built in 1925.

Although none of us pictured 2020 turning out the way it has, there are some benefits to this new normal with which we are dealing. We get to spend more time with our children and less time dealing with traffic, and many of us have begun to use this time out to organize our homes and learn new recipes. Working without pants, not having to deal with office politics, and learning to really appreciate teachers are some other benefits, but we’re betting you haven’t even given the best benefit of all a fleeting thought! As travel restrictions are lifting, our desire to travel grows, and even though you may have to work and your children may have school, there’s no reason the home you have to work from has to be your own; free internet in our Moab, Utah rental homes may be just the incentive you need to spread your wings and fly, and this guide to discovering the joys of a working vacation will ensure you can do it all. And because many of our properties are available at a discounted price during the month of August, it really is the perfect time for a Vacation in Moab!

Summertime has always been our favorite season, one that brings back memories of our own childhoods where the days seemed to stretch out before us without end. We would get up early and play outside for hours, drinking from the hose when we were thirsty, and staying out until the street lights came on. As adults today, our summers are far more structured, but the promise of summer vacations to new places gives us hope that adulthood isn’t that bad after all! And when your summer journey brings you to the desert landscape of beautiful Moab and a stay in one of our Empty Spaces vacation escapes, your inner child will laugh with glee when you discover all the fun that can be had. This guide to the top summer activities in Moab will ensure that you don’t miss out on a single moment of the fun and excitement!

Play in the Footsteps of the Dinosaurs

Traveling with children can be a bit tricky, as the younger generation isn’t exactly fond of museums and scenic sites and the older generation doesn’t feel the need to play the entire time, but the two generations can come together in agreement when a trip to the Dinosaur Tracks Trail is involved. The landscape where dinosaurs once roamed many millions of years ago is dotted with dinosaur tracks and authentic-looking recreations of the creatures with unpronounceable names. The museum, Moab Giants, is located at 112 UT-313, and promises an adventure the entire family will love!

Enjoy a Sip of Elegance

Not all getaways are created equal, and sometimes we just need a vacation sans children, allowing us to do exactly what we want to do. If that means sipping wine at noon on a hot summer’s day, Moab’s Castle Creek Winery is the perfect place to do so! Open every day except Sundays and national holidays from noon until 6 PM, the winery is located on a ranch that is still working today. Located at Milepost 14 off UT-128, every sip will surprise with the silky sweetness you may not expect from a desert winery.

Get Out of the Heat

Summertime in Moab is a tad sweltering, to put it mildly, so be sure to hydrate and get out of the heat as much as possible during your explorations. It’s a great time to visit the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage! For those who are big fans of older Westerns, you may find yourself recognizing much of the landscape surrounding you from many of the movies you have watched over the years, as Utah was a popular location for filming, which this unique museum explains in detail. Walk (or swagger) in the footsteps of John Wayne, swoon over movie stills of the exquisite Maureen O’Hara, and follow the lives of cowboys real and fictional at the museum found at 14 UT-128.

Mill Creek Hiking & Swimming Holes

Just outside of Moab, Mill Creek and North Fork of Mill Creek offer a unique opportunity for fun in the water. A number of natural swimming holes are reachable along these streams, and there’s even an accessible series of pools and an artificial waterfall near the parking lot. For those with the appetite for adventure, the signed trail up North Fork Mill Creek leads to more secluded pools and a natural waterfall. You can easily spend a day or more exploring the area and discover all of its natural wonders making these fantastic summer activities in Moab.

A Gift for You

Shopping is always a popular vacation activity and downtown Moab offers a nice selection of stores and shops for a shopping spree that will help get you out of the heat, featuring shops like The Find filled with all the things you never knew you needed until you saw them, outdoor outfitters that will help you find the gear for your Moab adventures, and charming souvenir stores in which you can find the perfect gift for your dog sitter back home! Most can be found on Main Street, allowing you to walk in and out to your heart’s content; the only thing you’ll miss is a pack mule to hold all your purchases!

Explore the Parks

In our humble opinions, Moab is the center of all that is beautiful, and the parks that can be found in the area offer breathtaking examples of this irrefutable truth. From Dead Horse Point State Park to Canyonlands National Park, the red clay earth and cliffs of beauty offer sights you won’t be able to stop yourself from immortalizing with your cell phone or digital camera. Wonder at Corona Arch, walk in the paths of ancient seas that have long ago dried up, and discover the daredevil in you when you raft along the Colorado River. World Wide River Expeditions is one of our favorite groups to adventure with, but there are others that are equally good!

Stay Home and Play

The most difficult part of your Utah vacation may be forcing yourself to leave the boundaries of your Empty Spaces property—so don’t! Take at least one day to sleep in late, sip coffee on the patio, and play in the outdoor pool or hot tub. Read in the air-conditioned coolness until your eyes begin to close and it becomes time to take an afternoon nap. Play video games with your kids, showing them their gaming skills were inherited from you, and revel in the luxurious comfort found in every nook and cranny of our homes. Summer has never been this fantastic, but only if you reserve your Empty Spaces abode in Moab, Utah today!
