This summer holiday is one of our favorite times here in the city, and you can easily see why. Moab will host a variety of fun events, and you will have access to many exciting activities. 4th of July Beehive Bash in Moab
When it comes to throwing a celebratory bash that is worthy of the 4th of July, there is no place better than Moab. One of the biggest celebrations in town is the annual 4th of July Beehive Bash that takes place every year. This two-day celebration showcases our nation’s birthday with some exciting activities. The fun and excitement start the evening of July 3rd with a free movie screening of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This movie screening is perfect for adult guests, with beers being offered at the showing. Don’t miss out watching this classic film starting at 9:00 PM. The remaining activities will all take place on July 4th starting at 9:00 AM sharp. Join in on the fun for an exciting volleyball tournament that will last until 2:00 PM. Get together a crew and put your skills to the test with this fun yet competitive tournament. A variety of family games and activities will happen from noon to 4:00 PM. Some of the exciting activities included are a dunk tank, bounce house, watermelon eating contest, fire truck water spray, photo booth, and a beer garden for the adults. Later in the evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM the GCHS mountain bike team will be showcasing a fundraiser dinner. Last but certainly not least, the Beehive Bash will end with a free concert from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM with artists Shuffle. 4th of July River Parade in Moab
Another incredible annual event that takes place in Moab each year is the 4th of July Rafting Parade. This aquatic event takes place on the Colorado River for a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else. Just as the name suggests, the event is a parade on the river with local companies decking out patriotic floats to display. The Rafting Parade will take place on the 4th of July and will be available to view at two different times: 8:15 AM and 11:30 AM. Seating is limited for this popular event, so make sure you get to the viewing areas early. Each child in attendance will receive a free 4th of July souvenir just for showing up. You can explore the area with hiking or mountain biking. Pick up a mountain bike from a local rental shop or book a mountain bike tour experience. If you want to see Moab from a different angle, you can book a horseback riding experience through the La Sal Mountains. As mentioned, we are nearby the Colorado River so you can expect plenty of boating and rafting. Many visitors come down for the white-water rafting that is some of the best in the state. Look out for white water rafting tours that go through Westwater Canyon or Cataract Canyon. The Green River is also close by and features plenty of rafting options too. If you want to beat the heat, book an early morning ATV or Jeep tour that will take you across the canyons from the comfort of a luxury vehicle. We are not going to lie to you, summer and fall in the desert can get a bit toasty, and when you are planning a seasonal getaway to Moab, chances are you will find yourself seeking sources of water. As to be expected, we advise that you keep hydrated during your stay, but we also invite you to spend some quality time playing in the H2O with a visit to the Moab Aquatic Center! Located at 374 Park Avenue, this indoor/outdoor water recreation area is the best place to cool off and let loose any frustrations you may have. It’s difficult to stay in a bad mood when you make a giant splash as you cannonball into the cool blue waters of the aquatic center!
With the Mountains Standing Guard
As the sun shines brightly on happy vacationers and local residents, the outdoor section of the Moab Aquatic Center is where most of the action lies! Surrounded by white tables with blue umbrellas (allowing dad and mom to keep their skin safe from the sun), the outdoor lap pool offers three lanes for competitive fun, while the zero entry pool is where your littles will want to play! A current channel is right next to the lap pool, as is a bubble pool, which, for those who are curious, is simply a pool with jets similar to a hot tub but without the heat. An island in the center features slides built into red rock that imitates the mountains that surround the space, giving the younger kids a safe place to show off their daredevil sides! Water tumbling off the sides offers a waterfall effect. Also surrounding the pools, white loungers are provided to let kids rest and parents catch some rays as they take in the beauty of the pool and the breathtaking landscape beyond.
Moab Aquatic Center is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are open every other day from 11 AM until 6 PM, except on Sundays when they close at 5 PM.
All Seasons, No Excuses At The Moab Aquatic Center
Of course, if you are visiting in the winter, you may be surprised to discover that pool time is still very much an option, thanks to the huge inside portion of this super exciting center which is home to a six-lane competition pool featuring two diving boards and an 18-foot slide made even more fun with Tarzan yells as you circle round and round, entering the water with a big splash! When you feel like taking the leap, brave souls can choose between the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards, practicing their dives as they cleanly enter the water. We at Empty Spaces, however, will stick to the sides of the pools and our cannonball jumps that make a big splash. More white tables at the side of the pool give parents and kids breathing room and a chance to stare out the windows; the Moab scenery is always worth a second look! And because not everyone is into water activities, free Wi-Fi means you can pop on your headset and listen to your favorite podcast while the rest of the family splashes around!
Traveling with a Group?
There are lots of reasons for visiting the red rocks of Moab, including honeymoons, birthday celebrations, and family reunions. If you are traveling with a large group and want a special place to party, the Moab Aquatic Center rents out all three of their pools for special occasions. Moab Giants
Before our ancestors stepped foot on the desert land that is Moab, dinosaurs once freely roamed the area, although it probably looked far different than it does today. Moab Giants, a dinosaur museum, allows visitors to see what the creatures once saw. Taking you through a virtual prehistoric aquarium, it teaches us about the undersea creatures as well as the ones who walked on land. Offering the opportunity to meet a megalodon and ancient sea turtles in 5D, as well as the “monsters” that ruled the air and land, the Moab Giants museum, located at 112 UT-313, is a local favorite!
Wilson Arch
The landscape of Moab is one of red clay and sandstone, and some of the natural features of the land entice visitors to examine it a little closer. Wilson Arch is one of the features you won’t want to miss! Created from centuries of wind and water, the opening inside the arch is the perfect spot for a picnic, but if you’re not in the mood for a hike, the pull off located just South of Moab off Highway 191 allows for an amazing photo opportunity. Taking nearly 75 million years to form, the arch was in its infancy when dinosaurs roamed. Its survival is a testament to the hardiness of the Valley; not all formations have stood the test of time!
Petroglyphs in Moab
The best way to learn about the history of a place is through their own words, or in this case, their own pictures. There are many places throughout the valley that feature petroglyphs that are symbols of the cultures of the Native American peoples who made Moab their home. Examine the birthing scene off Kane Road that depicts childbirth of people from 2000 to 8000 years ago or take your children to the Courthouse Wash Rock Art found along the Moab Canyon Pathway; there is a panel interpreting the art in both locations. If your family is interested in something more than red sandstone and pretty pictures created by ancient peoples, Potash Road offers petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks that have been preserved for millions of years. The Golf Course Rock Art Site at 3573 Westwater Road will allow the golfer in your family a chance to play if he or she can tear himself away from the fascinating stories told by the petroglyphs located there.
Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage
When traveling with children, you often discover the difficulty of finding attractions that keep both young and old and happy and entertained. Children’s museums only appeal to the very young, and only the over 18 crowds seem to be drawn to art and history establishments, but the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage may be the exception to the rule! Located at 14 UT-128 and featuring a collection geared towards film enthusiasts, it’s the Western Heritage part that will fascinate your children! All kids love the romance associated with cowboys and the Old West, and this free activity has plenty to keep your children entertained as you fall in love with memorabilia associated with movies that were filmed in the area. Hollywood isn’t the only town where make believe is the key commodity; many Western movies, including Wagon Master, Rio Grande, and Son of Cochise, were filmed right here in Moab!
Moab Cabin
This historic complex located off 65 North 200 East offers a fascinating example of life in Moab in the late 1800s. Featuring a cabin originally built in 1879 and moved here from another location, this is one of the homes that began the settlement of our desert town. Made of wood, clay, and thatch for the roof, this small structure is what most early settlers lived in when they first moved to the region. Also built in 1879 and located in this historic complex is the Moab LDS Church, which served as the primary church for settlers until the congregation grew too large and a new building had to be built in 1925.

Summertime has always been our favorite season, one that brings back memories of our own childhoods where the days seemed to stretch out before us without end. If that means sipping wine at noon on a hot summer’s day, Moab’s Castle Creek Winery is the perfect place to do so! Open every day except Sundays and national holidays from noon until 6 PM, the winery is located on a ranch that is still working today. Located at Milepost 14 off UT-128, every sip will surprise with the silky sweetness you may not expect from a desert winery.
Get Out of the Heat
Summertime in Moab is a tad sweltering, to put it mildly, so be sure to hydrate and get out of the heat as much as possible during your explorations. It’s a great time to visit the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage! For those who are big fans of older Westerns, you may find yourself recognizing much of the landscape surrounding you from many of the movies you have watched over the years, as Utah was a popular location for filming, which this unique museum explains in detail. Walk (or swagger) in the footsteps of John Wayne, swoon over movie stills of the exquisite Maureen O’Hara, and follow the lives of cowboys real and fictional at the museum found at 14 UT-128.
Mill Creek Hiking & Swimming Holes
Just outside of Moab, Mill Creek and North Fork of Mill Creek offer a unique opportunity for fun in the water. A number of natural swimming holes are reachable along these streams, and there’s even an accessible series of pools and an artificial waterfall near the parking lot. For those with the appetite for adventure, the signed trail up North Fork Mill Creek leads to more secluded pools and a natural waterfall. You can easily spend a day or more exploring the area and discover all of its natural wonders making these fantastic summer activities in Moab.

Wonder at Corona Arch, walk in the paths of ancient seas that have long ago dried up, and discover the daredevil in you when you raft along the Colorado River. World Wide River Expeditions is one of our favorite groups to adventure with, but there are others that are equally good!
